Teaching Experience

CIS 110 Mentor

During the Fall 2008 semester I acted as a mentor for CIS 110: Introduction to Computer Science, programming with Java. My responsibilities included teaching during one of the CIS 110 labs, holding office hours, attending CIS 110 meetings with the professor, and answering questions from students about the course material. I look forward to acting as a TA during graduate school and later teaching as a professor, so I saw this as the perfect opportunity to gain teaching experience at the university level.

At the end of the semester, students in CIS 110 choose between one of two tracks, a java track and a web track. I worked with other TAs to develop the web track and the Connect More project that students in the web track would complete. I also gave the first lecture which was an introduction to the project and HTML.

AWE Pre-Orientation Program

Computing Essentials

As a member of the Advancing Women in Engineering Sutudent Advisory Board I helped to plan the pre-orientation program. Our goal was to introduce the participants to the opportunities they would have as a Penn Engineering undergraduate, show them the ropes of Penn Engineering, and also introduce them to the city of Philadelphia. The director of AWE asked me if I would put together and give a presentation about the computing resources available to students in Penn Engineering. I compiled as much information as I could from the Computing and Educational Technology Services website (http://www.seas.upenn.edu/cets/) as well as drawing on both my experiences as well as those of my peers to put together the presentation. The presentation was about an hour long, and it was very well received by the freshman in the program as well as the upperclass advisors (as it contained a lot of information that they had not been made aware of until then).

Figure Skating Professional

I have been a figure skating professional for over four years, and I volunteered as a "junior coach" for several years prior to becoming a pro. I have taught group and private lessons to skaters ages two through adult. I have had students test in the Free Skating and Movies in the Field Disciplines, and I have taken students to both ISI and USFSA competitions. I also have experience coaching synchronized skating teams.

During my competitive figure skating career I earned a gold medal in Moves in the Field and passed my Pre-Gold Dance test, Juvenile Free Skate test and Juvenile Free Dance test. I was also a three time competitor in the United States Synchronized Team Skating Championships (once at the Intermediate level and twice at the Senior level) and a six time competitor in the Eastern Synchronized Team Skating Sectional Championships (at the Open Juvenile, Open Junior, Open Collegiate, Intermediate and Senior levels). I was also named to the New Jersey Council of Figure Skating Clubs Academic Honors Team in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. For the 2004-2005 season I was also named to the United States Figure Skating Scholastic Honors Team.
